Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) has announced CMI Entrance Exam 2016 for admission into its Graduate, Post Graduate and PhD courses offered in the fields of Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics for the academic session 2016-17.

  • Ph.D. in Mathematics.
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science.
  • Ph.D. in Physics.

Important Dates

The last date for receiving completed application forms is Friday, 15 April, 2016.
Admit Cards will be available online from 1 May, 2016.
Entrance examinations for all programmes will be held on Wednesday, 18 May, 2016.

Eligibility for Admission

  • B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics and Computer Science: 12th standard or equivalent.
  • B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics and Physics: 12th standard or equivalent.
  • M.Sc. in Mathematics: B.Sc.(Math)/B.Math/B.Stat/B.E./B.Tech.
  • M.Sc. in Applications of Mathematics:    B.Sc.(Math /Physics /Statistics) /B.Math/ B.Stat/ B.E./ B.Tech.
  • M.Sc. in Computer Science: B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc.(C.S.)/B.C.A. or B.Sc.(Math) with a strong background in C.S.
  • Ph.D. in Mathematics: B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc.(Math)/M.Sc.(Math).
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science: B.E/B.Tech/M.Sc.(C.S.)/M.C.A.
  • Ph.D. in Physics: B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc.(Physics)/M.Sc.(Physics).

How to Apply

You may apply online or request a printed application form, either by post or in person.

Applying Online
  • The preferred mode of applying to CMI's programmes is to fill out the online application form. Click on the appropriate link below.
  • Application form for all undergraduate (BSc) programmes
  • Note: You need not choose between BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Computer Science and BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Physics at the time of applying. The choice can be made after admission.
  • The application fee is Rs 600, to be paid online, or by DD. See below for more details.
  • Application form for all postgraduate (MSc/PhD) programmes
  • See below for more details about applying to multiple MSc/PhD programes.
  • The application fee is Rs 600 or Rs 700, depending on the combination of programmes that you apply for.

Applying to multiple MSc/PhD programmes

  • You can apply to at most one of the three PhD programmes: PhD Mathematics, PhD Computer Science and PhD Physics.
  • If you apply for any of the three PhD programmes, you must write the entrance exam for that programme.
  • You cannot apply to any other programmes in combination with PhD Physics.
  • You can apply for PhD in Mathematics in combination with MSc Mathematics. There is a common entrance exam for both categories.
  • You can apply for PhD in Computer Science in combination with MSc Computer Science. There is a common entrance exam for both categories.
  • You can apply to any combination of the three MSc programmes: MSc Mathematics, MSc Computer Science and MSc Applications of Mathematics.
  • Since all three entrance examinations are at the same time, you can select the subject in which you will write the entrance examination. For the other programmes, you will be short listed and called for an interview based on your performance in the exam that you write.

Syllabus

BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Computer Science 
The entrance examination is a test of aptitude for Mathematics at the 12th standard level, featuring both objective questions and problems drawn mostly from the following topics: arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus.

BSc (Hons) Mathematics and PhysicsThe entrance examination is the same as BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Computer Science and will test aptitude for Mathematics at the 12th standard level. For the syllabus and sample question papers, follow the links under BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Computer Science. 

MSc/PhD Computer Science The entrance examination is a test of aptitude for Computer Science featuring both multiple choice questions and problems requiring detailed solutions drawn mostly from the following topics: discrete mathematics, algorithms, basic computer organization and some programming. 

MSc/PhD Mathematics The entrance examination is a test of aptitude for Mathematics featuring both multiple choice questions and problems requiring detailed solutions drawn mostly from the following topics: algebra, real analysis, complex analysis, calculus. 

MSc Applications of Mathematics The entrance examination is a test of aptitude for Mathematics featuring both multiple choice questions and problems requiring detailed solutions.

PhD Physics The entrance examination is a test of aptitude for Physics.

Admit Card

  • Admit Cards will be available online from 1 May, 2016.
  • There is no photograph or signature required for the Admit Card. You will have to carry a print out of the Admit Card to the Test Centre along with a photo-identity card. The photo-identity card can be a government issued document like a passport, or an identity card, or a letter attested by your school/college/employer.

Selection Process

  • For all the programmes, applicants will have to take an entrance examination on Wednesday, 18 May 2016
  • Selection for all Ph.D. programmes will involve an interview at Chennai. For all other programmes, interviews will be at the discretion of the Admissions Committee—the Committee may call shortlisted candidates for an interview depending on their prior academic record.

Scholarships

All students receive handsome scholarships that meet all expenses. B.Sc. (Hons.) students receive a scholarship of Rs. 4000 per month, M.Sc. students receive a scholarship of Rs. 6000 per month and Ph.D. scholarships start at Rs. 25000 per month. Students of B.Sc. (Hons.) also receive an additional monthly scholarship of Rs. 1000, made possible through generous private donations. Students of M.Sc. and Ph.D. also receive supplementary scholarships made possible through private contributions.
